Who we are......by Kandi

Who we are...... by Kandi

It was my desire to have a coffee roasting business in Ligonier Valley for many years. I discovered a transportable roaster and knew that “now was the time”. My partner, Dave was crazy enough to agree to the idea and “so it began”. Our business was established in June, 2010

We ordered the roaster, made with all U.S.A. parts, from a small company out west, traveling nine days round trip to pick it up. It was quite the adventure--- as I’m sure the business will be too.

Our intention is to offer quality coffee that is fresh roasted. This makes all the difference in taste, as our increasing number of coffee “fans” can attest to. To maintain peak freshness, the beans are roasted after they are ordered.

Since our first event, Back to the Garden Market, “just down the road” from us, we’ve brewed and sold coffee at many festivals and markets. Along with purchasing direct from us….our coffee is sold at various other businesses from Rector to Pittsburgh with more in the works. A list is posted. Other businesses have expressed interest and we are receiving a lot of phone and e-mail orders. The positive response is very encouraging.

We hope that once you try our coffee you’ll taste the difference too and become a valued customer and friend as well!!

Coffee....is good for you!

It is Thursday and a week has passed since I posted the first entry of Coffee....is good for you.
I’m attempting to continue this on Thursdays with either recipes or items I have found involving caffeine/coffee.

It is snowing snowing snowing!!! I thought this recipe would be the perfect post. Stay home, curl up in front of a fire and enjoy sipping this drink over the weekend.

Chocolate Latte

1 1/2 cups half & half
2 Tb. brown sugar
2 cups strong coffee, Old Linn Run beans, of course :-)
1/4 cup chocolate syrup
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 cup frothed milk
*optional: 1/4 cup Whiskey
caramel sauce

Heat half & half in saucepan over medium heat (do not boil).
Remove from heat; stir in brown sugar, coffee, chocolate syrup, vanilla and whiskey- if desired.
Pour into mugs and top with frothed milk, drizzle with caramel sauce
4 servings approx.

*Note: As I can’t ever follow a recipe exactly due to my rebellious side coming out, I would suggest some tweaking if you prefer:
Half & Half can be organic, fat free etc
Demerara raw sugar vs. brown
Baileys, Khalua, Amaretto, Goslings Black Seal Rum or a combo
Chocolate syrup, chocolate shavings, cinnamon (organic) vs. caramel

To froth, I am in love with our Aerolatte Mooo! It is so much easier than using the cap/espresso machine.

Cascio’s Market

We enjoyed the Fire and Ice Fest in Somerset! The temperature was bearable, the food was delicious at Crazy Alice’s and it was fun to meet everyone at Cascio’s Market! Hopefully we will be delivering more coffee beans to their market soon. It will give us an excuse to go back to Crazy Alice’s and buy more from Cascio’s.

THUMBS UP FOR YOUR DAILY COFFEE BREAK!

By Kristin Kirkpatrick, MS, RD, LD

Coffee has been shown to have several benefits ranging from lowering your risk for dementia to decreasing your risk of sudden death. Now a new study looking at over 70,000 women found that those who consumed at least a cup of coffee with lunch were one-third less likely to develop type 2 diabetes over several years than non-coffee drinkers.

The study looked at both caffeinated and non-caffeinated coffee. Important to note here is coffee is not defined as sugar, fat-laden frozen, iced or hot coffee concoctions found on your local coffee shop menu (think mocha java drink with whip cream). If you’re planning a coffee break around lunch time with the girls, go for it but stay away from coffee “drinks” and stick with a pure cup of Joe instead!

We’re back!

Attempting to blog again. Happy 2011!!!! We watched the sunrise on 1/1/11 with no hangover, coffee and sparkling wine. What a great way to start the year! We looked a little worse for wear given the early morning hours though.

We want to thank everyone for their support! Christmas was very busy for us. We had a lot of orders, many were for gift giving.

Also, we have delivered beans to McGinnis Sisters, Monroeville, for the second time after a month has passed. Currant Thymes in Ligonier has been selling our bags of beans for awhile now. Backyard Gardens in Ohiopyle, our first client, brews and retails our coffee. Soon our beans willl be on the shelf at Cascio’s Fruit Market in Somerset. We will be there to kick off the sales offering samples of coffee this Saturday at 10:00 am til ? during the Fire and Ice Fest.

Abandoning this blog for awhile..... using facebook

To my one and only follower. Thanks Jody...... I'm sure you figured it out that I've abandoned this blog. With facebook, this seems more difficult for people to access. For now I'm signing off. Thanks again! Kandi

Labor Day Weekend

Have been a bad girl......neglecting the blog. Sorry!
We've been busy trying to get this business up and running well.

Last Saturday we were at the Tomato Festival @ West Overton Museum. Had fun, met lots of nice people and received a lot of great reviews with our coffee!

This Saturday & Sunday-Labor Day weekend, we will be at Music in the Mountains @ Ohiopyle.
Our coffee is being retailed on the shelves + brewed at Backyard Gardens @ Ohiopyle as well.
Yeah!

We will also be at the Flax Scutching Festival, Stahlstown Sept. 11& 12
and

Sept. 18th, we are in the works with donating our coffee to be served at the Loyalhanna Watershed annual benefit.

Hope to see some of our friends at any or all of these!
